Envision in the event that your parent had the prescience to compose a letter to you consistently, for a very long time, for the sake of Father Christmas ! At times it would be a speedy note, saying thanks to you for your letter. At different times it would be a letter loaded with subtleties and fervor about things that have been happening at the North Pole , with Father Christmas 's companion the North Polar Bear, Aurora Borealis, the Man in the Moon from there, the sky is the limit! "The Man in the Moon visited me a day or two ago — a fortnight back precisely — he frequently does about this time, as he gets desolate in the Moon, and we make him a decent Plum Pudding (he is so partial to things with plums in!)" What a gift that would be! Also, assuming that those letters were, once in a while, showed? Goodness my, what a fortune!


Furthermore, imagine a scenario in which the mystery creator of these letters turned out to be your dad, who likewise turned out to be a well known author?!.! It simply continues to improve. Fortunately, some way or another, these valuable letters and drawings from the 1920s were saved, and they are bound together in this superb book, Letters From Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien.


While most of the narratives are fun, for example, the one about the time that the North Polar Bear got up to naughtiness: "and turned on the tap for turning on the Aurora Borealis firecrackers. The North Polar Bear realized he should never, never contact it. [Yet he] turned on every one of Aurora Borealis for a very long time in one go. You have never heard or seen anything like it." Others are of a more serious nature instructing, love, sympathy and understanding to his small kids : "On the off chance that you see that as relatively few of the things you requested have come, and not maybe so many as some of the time, recollect that this Christmas all around the world there are a horrible number of poor and starving individuals."
